Peter Brown has been dancing the 5 Rhythms since 1997. He became an accredited teacher in 2001, after completing the 5 Rhythms Teacher Training Programme with Gabrielle Roth and the Moving Center School in the USA. He was fortunate enough to gain a Mind Real Lives Real People Millennium Award to pay for the costs of the training.
About Peter Brown

Before becoming a 5 Rhythms teacher, he worked with many different groups in community, education and health settings, including community & youth work, work with survivors of abuse, with men, women, children, adults, elders, straight and queer folk. He holds a Master's Degree in Cultural Studies, a PGCE, and is a qualified Dramatherapist.

Until June 06, he also worked for Mind, the mental health charity, with groups of people with long term mental health problems. His latest project is 'Movement for Mental Health', which is all about taking the movement practice out to people who would never be able to access a class or a workshop.

Currently, he's combining teaching 5Rhythms with being a postman...

He lives in Leeds with his wife Sara, and has two sons, Louis and Jude, and a goddaughter, Kerry. As well as dancing, he loves to be outdoors in the wild whenever possible, music, movies, and any excuse to fool around...

(favourite music you might hear at a class includes Nick Cave, Four Tet, Patti Smith, Radiohead, Leonard Cohen, Underworld, PJ Harvey, Primal Scream, The Waterboys, Felix Da Housecat: you're as likely to hear the latest from Franz Ferdinand as some classic techno track or Janis Joplin....)

"Finding the 5 Rhythms was finding my home. The dancefloor is my home, my passion, my refuge, my spiritual practice. Whatever else is going on in my life, whatever is knocking me off my feet, it's a place I can always find myself again, over and over, even as that very self disintegrates, dissolves and changes... The practice continues to challenge and delight, to inspire and entice, to keep calling me into becoming a little more human, a little more awake, a little more present with myself, my loved ones, and this world of ours.

It's a real privelege to teach this practice. To get to play lots of my favourite tunes and see a roomful of people responding in movement. Nice work! I want to take it out to people who would never dream of dancing to solve their problems. To people who wouldn't ever come along to a class or workshop. Let me know if you want to know more, or you have a suggestion.

I dance for a meaningful freedom, one which is more than the freedom to consume, and more than simply navel-gazing, one that includes not just me-me-me, but all of us and our world, one that does not deny suffering, but holds the simple beauty of being to be enough. I dance for love."
